It is straightforward. The reverse osmosis stages take periodic filter changes, roughly once a year for typical household use. If your assessment shows a softener is the right call, that adds keeping salt in the brine tank and checking it every few months; the softener itself has no filters to change because it self-cleans during regeneration. If no softener is recommended for your water, there is no salt to deal with at all. Your assessment spells out the maintenance schedule for the specific setup we recommend, so you know what you are signing up for before anything is installed.
